An Animal Crossing: Wild World Blog... But We're Italian!

Inspired by a friend, who has a blog of her own, I've decided to start blogging some of my gaming adventures. That same friend has started a new game of Animal Crossing: Wild World, and given that it's one of my favorite childhood games, I thought I should join her.

Day 1: 1/27/2026

Because I know the practice is good for me, I've decided to switch my game to Italian (as I've done with both New Leaf and New Horizons). Not too crazy, but I am theorizing that it does make my gaming sessions a bit shorter than they would be if they were in English.

Unfortunately, I do think that some of the fun character quirks and dialogue specific to this game will be lost on me. Fortunately, though, any time it's not lost on me, I'm going to feel really smart.

(Also, if this just becomes a blog where I translate a bunch of words from Italian to English because I think they're cool, I'm so sorry, but also not really.)

The first thing I notice is Kapp'n is calling me "sirenetta." I google what that means, and it comes back as "little mermaid," which makes sense in hindsight because of the word "siren" and whatnot.

Talking to aforementioned friend who was with me and playing her game, she said that Kapp'n had not called her that in the English version. Cool!

Now it's time to stumble through virtual work life, but in my second language. Fun!

I manage to do it mostly fine (I've played Animal Crossing before, the chores aren't too crazy, and I recognize just enough words to get the idea.)

Ironically enough, I only know the word for mayor ("sindaco") because I've been playing New Leaf in Italian for a couple of months. Therefore, when Mr. Nook told me to go talk to the mayor, I knew exactly who he was talking about. Whereas, if I hadn't played New Leaf in Italian prior to Wild World, I would've stumbled here. "Mayor" isn't exactly a common known that you need to know.

I get some of my chores done, but notice that Tom Nook is asking me to talk to people, and even though I'm pretty sure I've talked to everyone, we're still not progressing in dialogue.

I'm stubborn, refuse to look up the words I don't know (the computer is just... too far away...) and save and exit the game.

Day 2: 1/28/2026

I usually wake up pretty early and go straight to breakfast and Shadow Hearts, but this morning I wasn't really wanting to get out of bed. So, I rolled over and grabbed my modded 3DS.

I'm running into the same dialogue block with Nook, but decide to check if anyone new had moved into the town. Luckily for me, that was the problem. I go and introduce myself to the new villager, and successfully unlock new chores.

Here's some fun language barriers I solved!

#1: Redd's password! I talked to blue squirrel girl a couple of times because some of her text was highlighted. I recognized Redd's Italian name (I've already forgotten it), and what I believe to be the word for password. I go over to the tent and, just like that, the phrase worked!

I forgot what it was because I'm writing this down about thirteen hours later, but... trust, bro. Trust.

I was really proud of that one, but even moreso proud of the next one.

#3) One of the final tasks Nook will ask you to complete is to write something on the bulletin board. Now, I (reasonably so) don't know the word for "bulletin board" in Italian. However, Nook happened to be telling me the location of the bulletin board, and I know the words for those locations. He tells me it's near the mayor ("sindaco") and the stores ("negozi"). If I recall correctly, he also mentioned some verbs for writing ("scrivere"), and my brain successfully put two and two together.

Chores complete!

I got out of that stinky uniform and talked to blue squirrel girl again. She asked me what my birthday was (easy enough, right?) but, funnily enough, she commented that I was an Aires. Coincidentally, the unit I'm covering in my Italian class, that we started roughly five days ago, has a section of the glossary dedicated to astrological sign names. Curious as to what you would call an Aires, I had looked back then (and it paid off now!). It's "Ariete" in Italian, and while that's a cognate - I'm not an astrological girly and probably wouldn't have caught what blue squirrel girl was saying about my birthday had I not known the word already.

Day 3: 1/29/2026

TOCCA PER INIZIARE!!!

I love the difference between Wild World (which says "tocca," or "touch," to start) and New Leaf/New Horizons ("premi," or "press," to start).

I'm also just happy that I know words :)

I start off my morning with my 3DS clock set to an hour ahead (11.37am). I check my ringing mailbox to find a letter from Micia about a party she's throwing on the third of February.

...who the fuck is Micia?

I'm going to try my best to keep up with both Italian and North American names of characters, just be patient with me.

I go to Micia's house to try and put a name to a face, but she's not there. Along the way, I bump into Rossella and she say's that it's "cute" ("carino") of me to come and say hello? I googled it, and it looks like that word is interchangeable with "nice" in this context.

Which is good, because I almost thought she was being a bitch.

I tell her that I'm just here to chit chat, and then she starts talking about needing money? The conversation keeps going, though, and I realize that she's just telling me that if I need money, I can sell almost anything to Tom Nook.

We finish the conversation, and then I promptly run into Micia! She actually spots me first, with a little exclamation mark and ding signaling me to her location. It turns out that her name is Olivia in English (which took me way too long to find out).

Rododea finds me next, and gives me a quiz. She says that if I can guess what she ate for dinner last night exactly, then she will give me a BEAUTIFUL piece of clothing. I can't remember if I guessed fish or peaches (the words are too similar), but it was the first option and I got it right! "Primo colpo" is apparently the phrase for "first shot!" (Also, I misread clothing. She actually gave me wallpaper! I believe it's imperial themed?)

12.00pm strikes the town bell, and my ears are blessed with the twelve o'clock tune.

I go to Nook's bottega to sell some pears, but the tanooki just starts rambling and I don't understand most of it. I do believe, though, that the HOA is actually called the 'ABC' in the Italian version of the game - which is quite funny. It stands for the "Academy of Beautiful Houses."

Looking at my dialogue choices, I notice a word that catches me off guard. I have to google what it means, and it makes much more sense in context. Just search up what the word for "turnips" is in Italian, and you'll see what I mean.

Also! The fishing rod in this game literally translate to "cane for fish," which is really cute.

I go to do a bit of fossil hunting, storing my cane for fish in my empty letter slots (kid-me would be proud), and I run into Pascal! His name is Pasqualo, here, and he offers to let me hear some of his wisdom. I tell him to impress me, so he says the following:

Pensa se l'oceano fosse pieno di pepe invece che di sale...

"Imagine if the sea was full of pepper instead of salt..."

And then he hands me a rudder and backflips into the ocean.

I go to continue my fossil hunting, but Rossella exclamation-marks me and so I say hi. She says "caschi a fagiolo," and I think she's calling me a bean - which is cute! Curiosity gets the best of me, though, so I search up what the hell that means and it translates to "bean-shaped helmets." What an interesting catch-phrase.

She says that she has a small quiz for me, and asks me to rate on a slider how good of friends she and Tobia are. I move the slider up just a bit, and apparently that was wrong. She spits on me and kicks me in the shin before walking off.

I hit a rock with my shovel and a rollie-pollie comes out, but I don't have a net :/ I do find my first fossil, though! Shortly after, I also find my money-rock of the day!

Selling my goodies to Nook, I am fond of how I immediately remember my old strategy from back in the day. Instead of dragging and dropping the items into specific slots, if you drag it onto the blue border and let go, the game automatically drags it over to the next empty slot in line for you. I felt so cool figuring that out as a kid, and I love that it came back to me immediately.

I stop by the Able Sisters ("Sorelle Ago e Filo") and buy a starry night shirt, as well as bug Sable a little bit.

Afterwards, I stop by the museum and, in typical fashion, accidentally donate the fossils before getting them examined. I only have two, though, and so it doesn't take long. Any time I get annoyed with how much talking Blathers is doing, I remind myself that he wasn't in the GameCube version and I missed him then. Afterwards, I go downstairs to the caffe, sit next to Kapp'n, and order a coffee from Brewster. Knowing the man too well, I decide not to tell him it's too hot and to just go for it. Seeing Kapp'n, I remember that Pascal had also called me "little mermaid." Talking to Kapp'n now, though, he doesn't call me by that name. If I'm reading the dialogue correctly, I think he doesn't remember me at first, then he asks be about apples/citrus flavored something, and then he says that I'm insistent when I keep talking too him. Oops.

With some extra pears on hand, I decide to run over to the bottega again and get some fireworks paper. I write to Rossella, Tobia, Rododea, and Micia. Possibly getting my Animal Crossing games mixed up, I mention the word fruits, followed by a couple of fruits in both singular and plural form (anything the system might recognize). Then, I drop a pear in each letter. Thinking I'm funny, I ask Micia what she wants for her birthday, followed by "I want fruits!"

I do some money-making chores, afterwards. I mostly shake fruit off of trees, dig up fossils, and relocate flowers. Due to some other animal crossing game (probably New Leaf), I keep pressing 'X' instead of 'Y' to get to my inventory. It kills me a bit each time, but I'll get the hang of the new buttons soon enough, I'm sure.

Despite not finishing all my chores (there's still some fruit hanging from the trees), I decide to do some real-life tasks and end up saving my game. But, it's been relaxing and I'm excited to possibly get into the turnip market? Not sure how good of an idea that is, given that online servers are down...

After going about my actual life, I've returned to my 3DS. It's now 7pm in-game, and the town is noticeably darker than before. Snow is falling and the tune in the background is just perfect nostalgia. (I had to go to the grocery store irl, it's now closer to nine o'clock) I made a perfect snowman, his name is Pallino, and he likes warm hugs! That's not a reference, that's literally what he said ("abbraccio caldo!")

Unfortunately, feeling like I've done mostly all that I can for the day, the game makes me want to go do the same chores but in New Leaf, haha. Rododea runs up to me, saying that she's found the perfect nickname for me. Without giving me the option to decline, she decides that I'm now "tesorino," which means "sweetheart." It's cute, so I'm not upset :)

I sell all the pears on my island, and catch a tuna! (Coincidentally, another word I know of because of my last week of Italian classes).

Tobia comes up to me with a letter from a secret admirer. It says the following:

I caught the first half about pumpkins and head, but I'm glad I googled the rest. Truly a beautiful string of words. Tobia says that he doesn't understand it very much (neither do I), but he's very happy about it. And, honestly, I would be, too.

I buy a big, pink heart flooring from Nook (I need more membership points!) and I donate the tuna to Blathers (I heard a rumor that he seems very hungry).

There doesn't seem much else to do other than fishing, so I'll hop on again tomorrow.

No one tell Wild World, but I hopped on my New Leaf game shhhhhhhhh

Day 4: 1/30/2026

So, Gracie Grace is in town - I failed her quiz, and the whore gave me this letter with trashed clothes attached:

To make myself feel better, I vandalize her car with my shovel. Then, I decide to save (maybe that will fix it?) and do some homework (Italian, coincidentally) before playing some more.

I hop back on a while later to find that Gracie is back, and her first question is the following:

Collar up or collar down? I answer "giu'"

Second question:

Once again, not finding anything on the internet, I go with the first option.

So, I give her 2500 bells for a cute ladybug dress and a cute orange beanie with a blue stripe.

And then I mentally grab the moldy dress she gave me and strangle her long-ass whore neck with it.

Feeling like a brand new bitch, I go and blow all my money at the bottega. I walk away with a new wallpaper, flooring, and water stand for birds. Also, I've opened up all the letters from my villagers (Micia mentioned horoscopes, which was cool), and while they gave me mostly wallpapers and floorings, I got no fruits. I do have a big-ass snowman from the snowman I made yesterday, though.

I dump everything off at the house, and it's an absolute mess. Given that I don't have any drawers, though, I don't really have any other options :/

In good news, I now have a bug net and I made another snow man! He's huge and his name is Pallino and he's right next to the other one that is slowly shrinking. Friends!
